Monday, defenseman Jonas Seigenthaler received a match penalty for elbowing the New Jersey Devils during the second period. New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe is in the news again for all the wrong reasons after receiving this penalty.
Goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen of the Devils was hit by Rempe on the wrist of Eric Gustafsson, increasing the lead to 2–0. Shortly thereafter he caught hold of Seigenthaler by his extended elbow.
His second ejection against the Devils did not draw the ire of the New Jersey fans, who were traveling to many of the games, which meant that his second ejection was not enough, so Rempe’s reluctance to help matters. Not that Joe’s feared scrapper was to respond to the subsequent challenge of Curtis McDiarmid.
Rempe received a major penalty for a tackle on Nathan Bastian
Rempe received a major penalty for a tackle on Nathan Bastian during a contest between the teams on 22 February. He misjudged his own size as a 6’8 forward. His elbow on Seigenthaler was a crazy chicken wing, the result of which was almost certainly a suspension. He now has 54 PIM in just 56 minutes of NHL ice time, which is somewhat low.
The Devils had the man advantage for only five minutes but were not able to take advantage of it and lost the game, 2-1. Another bad thing amidst all this was that Seigenthaler had suffered a head injury which was a bit bad for the match, due to this he could not even return.
Rangers’ Matt Rempe Suspended 4 Games by NHL for Elbow on Devils’ Siegenthaler
The Swiss defenseman suffered a foot injury in 2023-24 that resulted in a broken leg and ultimately missed 16 games. Dougie Hamilton, his usual teammate with the Devils, attended the game with Hamilton. He was out for the year due to a torn pec. He has contributed to their defensive struggles.
When he played Monday’s game, he was second in player block among the Devils and his average ice time was 19:35, which puts him in fifth place. Travis Green, the interim head coach, will address the media and the entire team after the game, at which time all New Jersey fans will be waiting for an update on Seigenthaler’s status. Waiting eagerly.
It will be a story to watch to see whether the bad blood from the contest spills over into the rematch between the teams at Madison Square Garden on April 3. This was their last meet of the season, taking place at Madison Square Garden.
The 21-year-old Rangers forward has been a sensation since making his NHL debut less than a month ago, with the sensation already racking up four games and two ejections. He was ejected from a game for the first time when he was playing against the Devils in February. He once delivered a hit that lifted Nathan Bastian up. He was sent off at that time but was not suspended for that game.
But this time no one would be able to save him from suspension as he openly tried to hit Seigenthaler and stuck his elbow out and grabbed the defenseman. Recently an offensive-zone draw was won by Rempe.
