Leon Draisaitl signed a record-breaking $112 million signing extension with the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday, for which he was congratulated by fellow athletes from various sports. Joining those congratulating him was NBA star Dennis Schröder, who took to Instagram to celebrate his fellow German’s achievement.
Posting a picture of Draisaitl, Schröder captioned it, And while Draisaitl clearly expressed his admiration for the champion, Schröder had a simple but warm response.
The new approval will apply to the 2025-26 season and run until 2033. Draisaitl scored 41 goals and 65 assists in 81 regular season games last season, followed by an impressive playoff run with 10 goals and 21 assists.
NHL Analyst On Leon Draisaitl’s Contract Extension
When Leon Draisaitl’s signing extension’s average annual value was $8.5 million, he would have become the highest-paid player in the NHL per year.
While the deal sees Draisaitl, one of the league’s top talents, get a long-term deal, NHL commentator Frankie Corrado believes the German forward could have been getting even more money in a shorter-term deal.
And then Corrado pointed out that because of Draisaitl’s intelligence, his numbers will likely remain high for the next several seasons. A small endorsement would allow him to sign an even more lucrative deal in the future when the salary cap rises.
While long-term security is valuable, Corrado believes Leon Draisaitl may have given up money, and then chosen an 8-year extension rather than a shorter-term bridge deal when he was past his peak.
