Dodgers score – Baltimore Orioles Edge Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 in Series Opener
Ramón Urías delivered an important go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning, and Ryan O’Hearn also added a solo shot as the Baltimore Orioles edged out the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 on Tuesday night in the opener of their interleague series.
‘I feel amazing’: Urías stays hot, homers to beat LA
The Dodgers had the tying and winning runs reach base in the top of the ninth, but they were unable to cash them in as Chris Taylor lined out to end the game. The loss, however, still leaves the Dodgers three games ahead of Arizona and San Diego in the NL West.
In the eighth, Mookie Betts singled and swiped second, but Yennier Cano fanned Teoscar Hernández and Will Smith was caught looking at a third strike to complete the inning and no further damage.
The Dodgers managed just three hits in the last six innings and didn’t get a runner beyond second base after the third inning.
Coming into Thursday, Baltimore was a game back of the AL East-leading New York Yankees, but in great position to build momentum for a playoff push.
O’Hearn and Urías homer to lift Orioles over NL West-leading Dodgers 3-2 in interleague clash
“We’re in the prime position to get hot,” said Orioles starter Cole Irvin. “Good team win. We’ve got to keep it up.”
Urías’ second home run in as many games landed in the Dodgers’ bullpen, bringing Jackson Holliday along for the ride and putting Baltimore back on top. Since his recent tear began, five of Urías’ home runs have come this month. That ties his career-best from July 2022. Meanwhile, in his last 15 games since August 10, Urías has driven in 15 runs.
“He’s been our offense the last couple weeks,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “We’re not swinging the bats as well right now, so his contributions have been huge.”
O’Hearn’s solo homer in the second gave the Orioles an early 1-0 lead and marked Baltimore’s 201st home run of the season. It’s the first time Baltimore has reached 200 home runs in a season since 2019.
Matt Bowman earned the win, moving to 1-0, after getting Betts and Hernández in a tight spot in the fifth; he tossed 1 2/3 good relief innings. Seranthony Domínguez slammed the door shut in the ninth for his seventh save.
“Bowman got the biggest outs of the game in that spot,” Hyde said.
Jack Flaherty, who surrendered three batted balls in a rugged fifth inning against his old team, took a line drive off his right wrist from Colton Cowser. A trainer checked him and he remained in. Flaherty allowed three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings with five strikeouts and two walks.
O’s starter Cole Irvin pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits with three punch outs and two walks.
Orioles: First baseman Ryan Mountcastle isn’t improving much in his wrist and will get treated all this week. Right-hander Zach Eflin, whose shoulder has been barking, should return from the IL on Sept. 1, the team believes, without a rehab assignment. Right-hander Jacob Webb is going to be back early next month.
Dodgers: First baseman Freddie Freeman was rested as a matter of course after his fractured right middle finger. Manager Dave Roberts said Freeman might even skip the series but could be used off the bench. RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (triceps) is set to throw two innings for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday. RHP Tyler Glasnow (elbow) will have to go on a rehab assignment. C Austin Barnes (broken toe) is lined up to be activated Thursday.
orioles: RHP Corbin Burnes (12-6, 3.28 ERA) has given up 22 runs in his last four starts—the most in a four-game span in his career. He hopes to avoid his third consecutive defeat.
dodgers: RHP Walker Buehler (1-4, 6.09 ERA) is trying for his first victory since May 18 at Cincinnati.
