The Florida Panthers faced off against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Monday, with Auston Matthews scoring two goals and an assist as the Maple Leafs won 6-4.
Matthews leads the league in scoring with 62 goals this season, a career-high in the NHL. Matthäus said that when he went there he felt he came with a lot of purpose, especially in the first period, and that he played well overall. In the third period, he thought he wanted to win now and he was very cautious at that time but they are a very good team. They ended their win with two points and that’s great. According to him, we will have to be more aggressive in the third period because there is a desire to clean up some things.
RECAP Maple Leafs 6, Panthers 4 (Cats score three in the third but come up short in Toronto)
Nicholas Robertson and Matthew Neese each had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs (43-22-9). They have won three consecutive matches and have won five out of seven matches. Ilya Samsonov made 26 saves. Toronto could not maintain its second-place finish in the Atlantic Division as it finished four points behind Florida.
Nese said that he thought the match was very physical and fast-paced. This match felt like a playoff game. Vladimir Tarasenko had a goal and two assists to come to (47-23-5), the Panthers are 2-6-1 in their last nine games. Sergei Bobrovsky allowed five goals on 16 shots before fouling out after two periods. Six saves were made by Anthony Stolarz in relief. Florida Atlantic missed out on first place as it finished two points behind the Boston Bruins.
Panthers defenseman Brandon Montour said he saw more urgency in the third period. He found ways by which he could generate energy. It is very difficult when you see yourself going down. But this time they all fought this battle till the end. All the goals he scored were close to the net or in the crease. Making easy mistakes is not their team’s forte but it is happening. Tonight’s match was a bit difficult.
Robertson gave the Maple Leafs a 1–0 lead at 13:59 of the first period. He took a pass from Knies in the neutral zone and scored from behind Bobrovsky’s outstretched right pad. Robertson said he was going to die but he actually plays the game. He’s a very good goalkeeper, he’s a fast player so it’s a blessing that he went in.
There was intensity in that game, they wanted to send a message and at the same time, they wanted to get off to a good start against Florida. He has managed to achieve it once again. But this is Florida. Montour scored 47 seconds into the second period to make it 2–1, but Tyler Bertuzzi responded 39 seconds later to make it 3–1 by redirecting a pass from Matthews that went between Bobrowski’s pads at the top right. It was in the corner.
Nese said he was getting a lot of pucks on the net and creating chaos in front of the net and now he found a way to eliminate all those opportunities.
